Obviously, we must obey the two great commandments to love God and love neighbor. But do these commandments constitute the mission of the church? Or is the church’s mission something narrower, something shared by no other institution on earth, something we see modeled in the missionary work of Paul? At the very least, I would argue that the mission of the church is most clearly explained in the Great Commission, and that the other good things we do as Christians are virtuous, but either secondary or something other than the mission of the church altogether.

From the autobiography of Patrick, originally written in Latin around AD 450:

Thus I give untiring thanks to God who kept me faithful in the day of my temptation, so that today I may confidently offer my soul as a living sacrifice for Christ my Lord; who am I, Lord? or, rather, what is my calling? that you appeared to me in so great a divine quality, so that today among the barbarians I might constantly exalt and magnify your name in whatever place I should be, and not only in good fortune, but even in affliction? So that whatever befalls me, be it good or bad, I should accept it equally, and give thanks always to God who revealed to me that I might trust in him, implicitly and forever, and who will encourage me so that, ignorant, and in the last days, I may dare to undertake so devout and so wonderful a work; so that I might imitate one of those whom, once, long ago, the Lord already pre-ordained to be heralds of his Gospel to witness to all peoples to the ends of the earth. So are we seeing, and so it is fulfilled; behold, we are witnesses because the Gospel has been preached as far as the places beyond which no man lives.

Click here for wise advice from C.J. Mahaney to a concerned dad who fears that that the way in which he insists his kids obey him in the Lord could lead them to think of God the Father apart from love and grace.

Here is a sample of his advice:

    • You have the privilege of introducing them to God the Father and describing the ways in which he is different from you, different from all sinful fathers, and how in any way you are like him it’s only because of grace that you reflect him. See Luke 11:11–13.
    • Your honest confession of your sin to your children will protect them from having hard thoughts about you or God.
    • Communicating your affection for them—and joy when you are with them—promotes both good and accurate thoughts about God.

“When the Law shows us our sin, our past life immediately comes to our mind.  Then the sinner, in his great anguish of mind, groans and says to himself, ‘Oh, how damnably I have lived!  If only I could live longer!  Then I would amend my life.’ . . . Taking advantage of the weakness of our nature, Satan increases and aggravates these thoughts in us.  Then it is impossible for the conscience to avoid being more seriously troubled, confounded and frightened. . . . Therefore the afflicted conscience has no remedy against despair and eternal death except to take hold of the promise of grace offered in Christ.”
